Nineteen Cents Short of a Paradigm

Labor Day ’25

So, I got Labor Day off this year…

Labor Day is generally a grilling day full of BBQ, brats, and beer – but I don’t have anything to BBQ and I don’t feel like cleaning the grill even if I did. So, being as the weather was cooperating – I went for a drive to procure BBQ…

I’m a real sucker for a good BBQ brisket sandwich, and while I know of a handful of places local to me that can scratch that itch, I wanted the drive as well – so I drove up to Buc-ee’s which is near Berthoud on I-25.

Back in July of 1985, when I got my license, most of Colorado was no-man’s-land and you could go for two hours on I-25 north of Denver without seeing much of anything… Sure, there was a gas station and a couple of fast food places at CO-119 and I-25 east of Longmont, but other than that you pretty much had to make it to Cheyenne before you’d see more civilization.

Now it’s bumper-to-bumper insanity pretty much everywhere at all times on I-25 – and you don’t really leave Denver until you get north of Longmont.

Today’s issues were mostly ponderous, slow-moving RVs and truck/trailer combinations with out of state plates – where the trailer was either a 30′ camper or a 3-axle flatbed covered in ATVs… And with the speed limit being 75, that means you have a mix of people wanting to do 90 and the aforementioned mobile traffic jams doing 50-ish.

It was unpleasant… But with it being in the mid-70’s, with the windows down and the stereo cranked up – it was easy to ignore the traffic and just grin a bunch. 🙂

Anyway, I made it to Buc-ee’s and picked up $50 worth of snack stuff for the week – and that brisket sandwich I wanted…

The view from Buc-ee’s is pretty nice… Looking south-west toward Longmont / Boulder

I kept the Hellcat in “eco mode” today just to get a bit more MPG on the trip, and averaged about 30MPG there and back – 60 miles each way – not bad for a street legal race car.
