  • Weekend is now

Ahh, the weekend. Seeing as I’m broke from car repairs and the feeding of the crew here, I’ll be spending the next two days sitting in front of my computer… Maybe I’ll do some writing.

Let’s see, to recap the week:

Scales was missing till Tuesday due to being involved in a car accident Sunday night. He’s fine; the car he was in is totaled though.

Things are moving forward rather quickly at work for these new contracts. Good news for everyone there as the place is usually closed down from November to January.

Out of the blue Scales tells me last night that he’s going to go to school now… That’s good for him I suppose as, unlike myself, he didn’t get much real-world skill during his time in the Navy. What this means as far as supporting him further has yet to be figured out, but I foresee more of the same. It’s not easy to get the loans to do the school thing and I just can’t see Scales having the attention span or drive to do well in classes. I hope he can pull it off though, it’ll go a long ways towards getting him out of the “burger flipper” phase of his life.

And with that I think I’ll rustle up a PBJ for breakfast and get to work on some writing.

Take it easy out there folks.

  • Oh sure! But what’s the speed of dark?

It is officially winter time here in Colorado. Sunday’s snow was the starting pistol and Monday’s roads and traffic were the obstacle course… The roads weren’t all that bad, but just in case I took Evans across to Iliff and into Aurora to avoid places where people would be tempted to drive entirely too fast.

I was almost erased by an RTD (Reason To Drive) bus as it slid from it’s lane into mine, which was the only real mishap on the way to work. As I always say, never skimp on your tires. Those new All Seasons I had put on the Toyota at over $100 a piece did their job and I was able to scoot out of the way with relative ease.

The roads were icy and snow packed, but very passable until I got out to Aurora where Jae is house sitting… The house he’s watching is out in the plains, out past Aurora, and therefore doesn’t warrant street plowing. The little Toyota was fording streams door deep and snow drifts higher than the fenders, but we got there, got him, and got out with little trouble.

Once back in civilization, Jae bought me breakfast at “Rosie’s” diner not half a block from work. While we packed away a huge breakfast we watched folks out on the streets sliding around, running into things, and doing 360’s in the middle of intersections… It was some bizarre ice ballet with cars. One fellow slid around and smacked a light pole or something and dented the passenger’s side rear quarter panel right into the back tire. I felt sorry for him as he stood out in the snow and bent the fender back out with a pair of pliers… What made it worse was when we noticed he still temporary plates on the car.

Other than that it was a pretty routine day and while I was happy to get back home (Scales was still MIA), once I was sitting here in the peace and quiet, with a fire going in the fireplace, I started to nod off. So I went to bed at about 8…

And that was my day. 🙂

And now I have to get rolling so I can go pick up Jae again and have another fun day at work.

    Later…

  • Winter… Woot!

    Today’s weather report… Snow!

For the first time in a long time we got snow here in Denver on Halloween. When I was a kid growing up here in Colorado I remember every Halloween as an exercise in putting a costume over a snow suit. We had just as much fun as kids in other states and got just as much candy… But we also got to have snowball fights in costume.

It’s a lot of fun to sack the neighbor’s snow fort when they’re dressed up as ghosts and you’re a ghostbuster. 😉

I hope we continue this upward trend and it snows a LOT this winter. Screw the California imports and their “I don’t like snow, it’s too cold. It should be 80+ and sunny all year round…” Go back to the land of fruits, flakes, and nuts if you don’t like it. 😉

I got the Toyota tuned up just in time… I left the house Saturday at around 9, got the oil changed at 10, got to the brakes place at about 11 and didn’t get out of there till 6:30… $400 later and I have all kinds of stopping power now.

Yesterday I went and bought some basic tools (mine from my storage unit have gone missing, along with everything else) and replaced the plugs, wires, and distributor cap. I got new wipers too… I was thinking I’d need them today, and I was right.

I also got a price quote on fixing the exhaust system: $800. And the valve job the car needs is a mere $1200… It’s time for Scales to get a job and support himself so I can afford this.

I think I can do the new catalytic and couplings myself as I have a garage now, which drops the price to about $300. But I have to get Jae’s car running first just in case mine is OOC for a day or two and who knows what’s wrong with his car. I’m leaning towards fuel filter, which is an easy fix and which is why it won’t be that.

    Meanwhile…

Saturday night Aryntha, Rai and I went over to a local dinning establishment, had an excellent meal, and right as we were getting ready to pay, the manager walked up to the table and said there was an ‘incident’ at the other end of the building and we had to leave… We’re still not sure what happened, but we did as instructed and left, without paying. I went back Sunday afternoon and covered the bill, but they still wouldn’t tell me what happened.

Well, I’d better sign off here and get an early start. Who knows what sorts of cool accidents I’ll get to see today as this summer’s crop of Colorado Imports get to experience snow for the first time… Oh the joy.

Have a great day out there, and stay warm. Oh, and push the orange juice…

  • Note to self: Listen to sermon before eating missionary…

I realize that my journaling has been erratic of late and this is mostly due to efforts at work and around the house… I’ve just simply been really busy.

In the work arena I’ve been given the network there, as well as the responsibility of improving the hardware compatibility lab, inventing new and better ways to test (break) things, and training everyone in things like proper test procedure, documentation, and anything else I can teach them.

It’s all very similar to the time I spent at Marianapolis teaching CompSci and working with ZeZe on the network there.

We’ve got some *really* big contracts coming up in part due to my efforts… It’s nice to be a part of something again.

Meanwhile, around the house things are settling into their proper rhythms… Except for Scales who just doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere really quick. He’s still unemployed, stays up/out all night, doesn’t get moving till 11, and seems to spend all day either playing computer games or watching TV… Not exactly the proper method for getting employed.

I took Tuesday off to get the place cleaned up: Did the dishes, took out the trash, and generally made the place feel better… This was triggered by the fact that we’d been here for a month and most of the dishes were still packed and the kitchen was a disaster. Two days later the sink was full of dishes again and the kitchen was a disaster. This sucks as Jae and I aren’t here all that much and therefore don’t make a lot of mess…

I need to talk to Scales I guess. I hate this part of the roommate thing.

I figured out the other day that right now I work about 2-3 hours a day to support Scales… I wouldn’t mind this if he was furthering himself with school or something. But that’s not in his plan either.

    Kids…

Anywho, Jae is out this weekend house sitting for some friends. He took his liquid cooled monster computer with him so I’m sure I’ll see him online if I get the chance. I hope he’s got stuff to eat there…

Oh, that brings up another thing that’s going on around here… Jae’s car is fubar. So now we’re down to one car, mine, for all of the running around Jae and I need to do. Scales still doesn’t have a driver’s license so he’s a non-factor, but I assume that’ll be changing eventually too.

Well, I should get going around here and get the place cleaned up. I bought a microwave last night and need to get it set up too.

So have a great day out there folks!

  • If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.

Another week has flown by and here I sit watching the sun come up, enjoying a nice cup of Mr. Grey, and mentally reviewing the last week.

It actually got quite cold last night, which prompted me to crank up the fireplace and see what it can really do… It heats the house quite nicely actually. It has coils in there that connect to the hot water heating for the house, so when the fireplace is running, so is the baseboard heating. It works rather well. I guess I should go out and get more firewood this payday as it’s the main heater here and it would suck to run out.

We do have a boiler here too, but it’s about the size of a computer case and is only good for keeping the place above freezing.

Let’s see… Jae is still fighting to get a Colorado driver’s license: The levels of redundancy involved with doing the simplest of things since “Homeland Security” is astounding, really.

Jae tried to get some college classes in CompSci, but was told that he needed to prove he lives here in Littleton to get the price breaks needed to make it affordable. So off he went to get a Colorado drivers license to replace his Washington State one. He was told there that he needed two forms of ID as they can no longer accept :just: a drivers license. So after much running around to family locations he secured his birth certificate, and was the told that it wasn’t official according to the new laws, and that he needed to get a new one…

And that’s where Jae sits right now as the semester started and he’ll have to wait till next year to get into class.

  • Mid week update…

    Here it is, Wednesday already.

Jae is known for his ability to eat things. I know this sounds odd, but it’s true. See, he has the metabolism of a hummingbird and even though he can, and will routinely, put away a burger the size of his head from “Fat Burger” over in Aurora, he’s still probably 130 pounds soaking wet.

Well, this weekend while Carl was out and about, Jae and I decided to try out a local dinner establishment at nearby “Aspen Grove”. Enter “Ted’s Montana Grill” where we had bison burgers and Jae, who ordered this beef and bread monstrosity, was nearly forced to admit defeat.

To his credit he did eat the whole thing, but there was a few minutes there where he told me it was over and Ted’s had won. He was even forced to use a fork to eat the thing as he just couldn’t fit it all in his mouth.

Oh, the food was really, really good.

  • Groovy!

    Ahh, a weekend!

It was sure nice to sleep in this morning and get up when *I* felt like it… 7am. 🙂

So here I sit in the living room; sunlight streaming in from the sliding door to the porch and the big bay window, and some old Credence filling the room with happy “Loosianna” rock.

The view of the dining room from where my desk will be.

I’m realizing that I’m truly happy for the first time in a long while: No worries, not stressing over someone else’s day, not worrying about how someone else is going to pay their bills or if the guy I‘m working for is going to pay me… Jae and Carl don’t need me to do anything but pay my part of the rent and utilities so far, and things at work are better than I would have ever expected. Even Aryntha and Rai are doing well (finally, they deserve a few months of nice things after the last year of shit)…

    Nice.

Anyways, I’m going to make myself a cup of “Mr. Grey” and hang out on the porch for a while. I suggest everyone stop and listen to Credence’s “Fortunate Son” today, sing along, and smile a lot.

  • Vote for Cthulhu! It’s time to vote for the worst of two evils!

At work everyone ends up with some sort of nickname or handle… This is due to the fact we play a lot of video games there and one needs something to put into the character creation screen, account name, or other user identity thingy… Well, we have a lot of Bills working there and out of the blue I was suddenly “pony bill” because of my hair.

I find this interesting on lots of levels. ; )

Anyways, I have to make :something: for breakfast and get on the road, so I will wish you all a great day and talk with you next time.

  • And it begins… again!

Ok, whew! Talk about your bad months… But all is well that ends well and the ending (or beginning actually) is turning out to be really nice.

To recap: You can read below about how I moved down from the mountains in July, after being badgered by everyone I know about how I was living too far away and no one was seeing me often enough… So, with the invite to stay at Wolf and Lyon’s place till I found a new job, I moved.

    That’s when the fun began.

I admit it: I’m a monk… I prefer solitude and quiet; to write my silly stories, draw my silly pictures, compose my silly music. I’m very much a creature of random inspiration and wandering imagination and while Wolf and Lyon used to be similar, time has passed and things have changed. I’ve been a prisoner of their basement for a month and while still a little shaky, I’m flying again.

So, here I am in my own palatial abode with two roomies and imaginative and things are really looking up.

I’ll put my desk there in front of the window…

I guess that segues well into the introductions…

(Leads you over to a snoring reddish-gold dragon who is sleeping on the couch in the living room with one wing draped over his head.)

Shhh… This is Carl, a dragon by nature. He’s the power source around here as he’s got limitless energy and a super-bouncy outlook on life. He’s crashed out on the couch most likely due to a late night of talks with our other roommate and I’m trying to not wake anyone up as the computers are in the living room too… More on that later.

(You carefully step over a pile of blankets, pillows, a bean bag, and other assorted soft things and realize it’s another critter…)

That’s Jae who is, well, Jae. Jae has a lot of mousy qualities (his nest of blankets this morning is a good example) but I’m not quite sure just what sort of critter he is yet. Jae is a real source of inspiration as he’s got about the most unusual view point on everything I’ve ever seen; which makes him very good at his job at *censored*…

Oh, hehe, yes… We all work at the same place too.

So moving on to the computer comment: All of our computers are set up in one corner of the living room as we’re all into “Shadowbane” and collectively play for a few hours in the evening. It’s amazing how fun that game is with other people playing it, in the same room even.

Lets see, what else? Oh, I sold my 17” Powerbook and bought a PC as we moved in here. While I miss my Mac, I have to admit that the horsepower of this new machine is quite refreshing. It’s a 3.2Ghz EE based machine with a gig of dual channel DDR-400 ram, a 200 gig SATA hard drive, a dual layer DVD-R, and a PCI-e ATI X600 video card. It’s nice and was one third the price of the equivalent Mac tower…

Of course I got the textbook definition of “irony” after I bought the new PC… My new house is exactly 1.5 blocks from one of the Apple stores here in Colorado. :sigh:

I figure I’ll have one of the new iMac machines in a month or two though, so don’t worry about me being swayed to the dark side or something. : )

Well, the dead are beginning to rise and I have to get ready to drive across town to work. So I’ll post more later including the story about my nickname at work…

Have a great day out there!

  • Home again, home again…

Another quick entry here just to say I’m moved into my new house and all is well. I’ll post photos and whatnot soon, I promise.

  • Life sucks, film at eleven…

Just a quick note to let everyone know I’m still alive. I’ll post more on or around the first when I get out of here.

  • Out and about…

Yesterday found Aryntha, Rai, and I down south of Pueblo taking pictures and enjoying the state of being known as Colorado.

Our first stop was south west of Pueblo a bit, in the mesas that front the San Isabel forest. From there we drove though the forest and though a little town called “Rye” where we encountered what is probably the last real phonebooth in Colorado.

From there we drove on to Walsenburg Colorado which is about 50 miles from New Mexico.

Well, I have to go upstairs and discuss the new game plan… The landlord just called and told Wolf and Lyon that they have 45 days to get out of the house as the landlord and his wife want the house now.

    Joy.

  • Weekend events…

Yesterday after work was pretty cool. I drove over to Aryntha and Rai’s place after work, and we collectively went over to this New-York pizza joint where they know the thickly ‘jersey accented proprietor. Fantastic pizza.

From there we gathered up a few cameras and decided to drive east until we reached a place where there were no people… We ended up on this desolate dirt road somewhere south of Flagler Colorado and were able to play around with some long exposures without the light pollution/traffic/hassle of humanity.

What troubled me about this is it took up a little over two hours to get to where there were no people…

It was nice to be out there though as you really got the feeling you were under a big bowl that was painted with stars, clouds, and the moon… There was nothing but fields from horizon to horizon in all directions.

    It was grand.

After we hung out there and decompressed for a bit we turned around and started to make for Denver again… This is where Aryntha caught the interest of a Lincoln county sheriff and was pulled over.

What should have been a stressful situation was quickly resolved as the officer turned out to be the equivalent of Superman… He spoke with “radio voice”, was really just making sure that we knew a light was out on the car and wanted to tell us about this *huge* accident about 20 miles ahead.

All in all a pretty decent human.

So onward we went and a few minutes after the sheriff passed us we saw him again on the side of the road helping someone under the hood of their car.

We eventually came to the accident: What was left of the semi was nothing more than a charred slag heap of aluminum and steel and the few cars scattered about weren’t much better. All in all there were something like 20 emergency vehicles at the scene. We were detoured off the highway and quickly came to another semi in distress on the detour… The driver of this truck had misjudged a corner and ended up with one of the two trailers he was pulling in a ditch and mostly blocking the detour.

    Fun.

After a lot of wishing we had never left the middle of nowhere we got back on the highway and made it back to their place… I made it back here at 5am and successfully ignored the clamoring till 10am.

Tonight is a gaming night though Wolf, Lyon, and Noan won’t be here for it. They’ll be off at some BDSM thing.

    Oh well.

And with that I have to log off, go get some dinner, and get in character. 🙂

  • The more things change…

It’s amazing to me how certain things from yesteryear are just as poignant today… Or even more so.

Take for example the piece of music I’m listening to right now; “Revolution Calling” by Queensryche…

Written by Geoff Tate and Micheal Wilton in the late 80’s… A generation ago…

For a price I’d do about anything
    Except pull the trigger
For that I’d need a pretty good cause
Then I heard of Dr. X
    The man with the cure
    Just watch the television
Yeah, you’ll see there’s something going on

    Got no love for politicians
Or that crazy scene in D.C.
It’s just a power mad town
But the time is ripe for changes
    There’s a growing feeling
That taking a chance on a new kind of vision is due

I used to trust the media
To tell me the truth, tell us the truth
But now I’ve seen the payoffs
    Everywhere I look
Who do you trust when everyone’s a crook?

    Revolution calling
    Revolution calling
    Revolution calling you
    [There’s a] Revolution calling
    Revolution calling
    Gotta make a change
Gotta push, gotta push it on through

I’m tired of all this bullshit
They keep selling me on T.V.
    About the communist plan
    And all the shady preachers
    Begging for my cash
Swiss bank accounts while giving their
    Secretaries the slam

    They’re all in Penthouse now
Or Playboy magazine, million dollar stories to tell
    I guess Warhol wasn’t wrong
    Fame fifteen minutes long
Everyone’s using everybody, making the sale

    I used to think
That only America’s way, way was right
But now the holy dollar rules everybody’s lives
Gotta make a million doesn’t matter who dies

    Revolution calling
    Revolution calling
    Revolution calling you
    [There’s a] Revolution calling
    Revolution calling
    Gotta make a change
Gotta push, gotta push it on through

I used to trust the media
To tell me the truth, tell us the truth
But now I’ve seen the payoffs
    Everywhere I look
Who do you trust when everyone’s a crook?

This could have been written last week and be just as relevant… Just replace “Communist” with “Terrorist” and it’s the same story.

    Scary.

I guess the government folks have been at this for a while and just keep trying new versions of the same tactic every generation or so.

  • The air up there…

Yesterday was pretty fun; Aryntha, Rai, and I took a drive up to Fort Collins and wandered about “Rist Canyon” for a while. We were there to visit and take pictures of the AT&T microwave site at Buckhorn Mountain, but as usual we got pretty caught up in the view.

Here’s a couple of samples of what you can see from the top of Buckhorn Mountain…

The first photo is looking west from the site and the second is looking north into Nebraska.

When we got back I returned back to Haven along with Aryntha and Rai for some gaming… Unfortunately as soon as I stopped moving I stopped moving for the night.

I went to bed last night at about 11… Got up at about 10… I guess I needed the sleep.

Anyways I’m going to go do my morning routine, update the OMFuXS web site with the info from yesterday, and go get lunch.

    Take it easy out there!

  • Music, non stop…

Well, it all started last night while I was attempting to show Scales some of the finer points of music theory (and showing off my Mac) and I put together a quick little techno beat pattern as an example… Scales is quite enamored with techno and dance music.

Well tonight I finally had a chance to play around with the Hammond organ I have access too, my pet sequencer, and the very pricey but worth every penny Pro Tools package.

I started out with the idea that it would be fun to integrate an instrument *never* heard in techno or dance music into a piece of said same… So with that in mind I spent the evening composing “Hammond Cheese”.

The Hammond organ is an amazingly mechanical device and when operating it reminds one of a steam locomotive, which is where the “mechenwerken” parts of the piece draw their inspiration from. The lighthearted aspects, and frenetic measure of the organ itself are inspired by Scales himself.

So, without further adieu, I present “Hammond Cheese”.

  • One down…

Well, I’m fast approaching a week at the company and I have to say this is the most fun I’ve ever had and gotten paid for it.

I can’t say much about what I’m doing do to all of the confidentiality agreements between the customers and us, but I’m working with some pretty cool stuff.

I can say I’m working on a racing game right now, which has some real industry leading features (and a few dumb things as they all do), but what’s most humorous about it is that after 8+ hours of working with it, I really have to hold back from driving my Toyota like the cars in the game. Your reaction time gets so ramped up from directly linking your eyes to your hands all day that traffic on the highway seems like it’s going about 15 MPH.

There’s also this tactical simulation we’re working on that is just amazing… And unbelievably realistic. Too bad both of these games require pinnacle technology right now, which should be mid-high end by Xmas.

Well, Wolf just came home so I should shut down the music and head for the basement.

  • On the clock…

I have once again joined the illustrious members of the working class… Friday I submitted my resume to a company here in Aurora that specializes in QA testing of software and performance testing of commercial web sites.

Today I had an interview at 10, and by 11 I was working on the QA process for a new video game. Monday I’ll be taking over the performance testing arm of the company, which is what I was actually hired for. The performance testing side of the house should be a lot of fun as I’ll get to break things, albeit programmatically, but it’s still breaking things.

The two best parts about working with this company is that it’s exactly 5 minutes away even in rush hour traffic, and the people there are so laid back that if they were any more laid back they’d be dead… I was told by the secretary that it was a casual place, but wow. And there isn’t any stress to be found anywhere.

This is such a nice change of pace from the contractor stuff I’m used to and the software/network sweatshops I’ve been run though for years now.

Anywho. Once I get Wolf’s computer back up and running I’ll be heading for bed… Windows XP shit the bed on her the other day due in part to the addition of a wireless card and the drivers being problematic. It’s so nice to see a bad driver rip an entire OS apart over a 48 hour period.

Again, I know it makes certain people paranoid, but I really do like my Mac.

Speaking of Mac, I’ll be doing some QA for a few upcoming OSX games… I can’t say which ones or even what they’re about, but it brings a smile to my face to be able to provide a service that makes publishers happier to make a port to OSX.

And with that I have to go download about 700 megs of patches for XP… Bleh.

    G’nite all.

  • What fools these mortals be…

    On Role Playing:

(First off, a disclaimer for those in the game who will read this and will need a disclaimer: The character view sections of this post are from the point of view of a lawful evil character… So if he refers to you as an idiot or comments on your screeching, don’t take it personally… Ok?)

Something I noticed long ago is that good role playing has absolutely nothing to do with ‘levels’ or the quality of your ‘stats’… Last night was a good example of this…

For the purposes of fitting Raeshlavik into the game and the game system, he worked out to be a 4th level character to the rest of the groups 8th. This is due, in part, to what he is and the stats that he gets because of this.

Well, after some gross game adjustment last night on Scale’s part, wherein he had an NPC that was traveling with the party kill everyone in their sleep… Ok, I need to clarify this I see…

Ok, first off Scales has ‘played’ AD&D for a long time, but is new at the GMing thing. When the game was first set up a couple of months ago, Scales had asked everyone to create characters and two players, rather than create something new, opted to play a pre-existing character…

Rule number one: don’t let people play a pre-papered character in your game. It’s ok if they use the concept, but have them re-create it within the bounds of your setting.

Ok, so being as one of these two characters comes complete with heaps of pre-existing stuff (epic level intelligent soul-sucking weapons, vast cosmic powers, spelljammers full of riches, artifact-like familiars, etc) Scales has to ramp up the rest of the party with similar… So before anyone has even seen the game world, they are running around with the equivalent of epic level characters. This causes an eventual problem…

    They can’t be challenged…

See, most gamers deep down want a challenge from the game; to surmount an epic evil, to correct some injustice, or perhaps cause the afore mentioned problems… They may not know this, but they do. Otherwise, why play? Oh, sure, there are the players who are only there for the ego stroking, but most still want a challenge.

Where you get a problem is not that the players playing the uber-characters want to avoid the challenge, it’s that they really like the character; the persona if you will, and want to portray that being in game.

Ok, so Scales being new to all of this makes that boo-boo and has to rectify it, but goes about it the wrong way…

Rule numbers two and three: Don’t kill the players without a fight. Don’t take away things you’ve given them without it being their idea.

Scales, now having a bunch of 8th level characters with another 10 levels of toys, has no choice but to create epic-level encounters and in doing this gets the party contractually obligated to an ancient dragon. Things quickly work out that the party’s inexperience with the world and swollen heads from their stats and gear, get them onto a collision course with said dragon which will end up with everyone being quite toasty and very dead… So he has an NPC thief kill them all in their sleep (as thieves do), steal all of their toys (as thieves do), and by way of a relic level item, brings them all back to life (which is something thieves never do as the dead don’t hunt you down, but…).

I say them because I hadn’t brought myself into the game yet.

Ok, cue the whining and discontent of a room full of players for breaking rules two and three… Fortunately everyone is pretty experienced, and I have a feeling they knew it was coming, so the whining didn’t last but 10-15 minutes.

Whew… So after all of this everyone eventually sucks it up and gets on with the game as normal, albeit very high level, noobs.

One of the players (the one with the epic level weapons, the artifact-like familiar, and a spelljammer full of riches) still hasn’t come to grips with loosing all of it’s toys and, due to the fact that the swords are supposed to return to it, steadfastly refuses to move from the spot…

Sooo, it’s decided that with the money the party has accumulated (and the spelljammer full of riches) that they will build an inn here in the middle of the forest, on a trade road between Waterdeep and the towns to the west. The druid in the party sets about wood shaping while the mage and the monk return to Waterdeep to buy supplies.

Time passes, money is spent, and rule number four is broken: Don’t give anything to the characters that they themselves haven’t bought.

The inn, now a gargantuan facility that is nearly a small town unto itself with it’s own hirelings, magical amenities, and other such silliness, is finally open for business…

    Cue Ravik…

The familiar of the Druid sees me approaching from the north and reports that something huge, black, and nasty is approaching. As all of the players are familiar with Ravik and the fact that the GM has asked me now, twice, what I’m doing, they almost all react accordingly based on their player knowledge of me.

So, I naturally use that to my advantage…

The druid runs to get Lyon’s half-fiend character, Malagar, who is the proclaimed bouncer for this little group and tells him about the evil, horrible creature approaching from the north. He, in turn, takes off to encounter me before I actually get to the Inn to protect it and everyone and the druid follows. When they get to me (I knew they were coming from miles off thanks to a great listen check) I’m laying down between the two most evil looking trees I could find looking regal and contemplative… And mostly harmless. (The trees are added to the description to add to the “evil” flag that I want to wave…)

The druid roleplays well and upon seeing me, a unicorn, figures that I’m a spirit of the forest, a ‘good guy’, and bows to me. I in turn mention that it’s so nice to see that some of the old race still know their place which is groveling before me. (Again, reinforcing the ‘evil’ while in fact only demonstrating my ego.)

The half-fiend who has never seen anything like me other than horses is taken aback by the fact that I spoke. The druid, kneeling there on the floor before me, agape, looks like she’s been hit with a big hammer. I turn to Malagar content to completely ignore the elf now that it has demonstrated it’s subservience.

“Greetings brother” I rumble at Malagar, “Perhaps you could inform me as to why these mortals have defiled my forest with their construction?” (I use brother here as he is also an immortal creature… It’s not my fault if that is misconstrued.)

During this the Druid has run back to the Inn to get the Paladin in gear with tales of the “evil unicorn” coming to get them and the fact that I referred to Malagar as ‘brother’…

Malagar stammers a bit, but manages to squeak out that they are there because the leader of their group, a paladin, has lost all of it’s magic weapons and is waiting for their return. I smile inwardly at this information and ask him who else is there, and am told about the rest of the party… I quickly dismiss Malagar as an idiot for disclosing unit strength, position, and weaknesses to an unknown assailant. “Fine… Very well then, I shall have to go see about this myself I suppose, and deal with it as I deem necessary.” and I rise to my feet and begin heading for the Inn. (I say the word deal with as much evil, dripping, nastiness as I can, again driving the “evil” point with everything I have.)

I have now deduced that the fiend is obviously trying to mend his ways if he comes at the beck and call of a druid, which means he’s probably not fully trusted and that he is obviously the lackey for several others. That they’ve all been stripped of their magical items by a thief, and that they are busy with the ins and outs of an Inn while none have any merchant skills with which to do this… So, a whole troupe of ‘babes in the woods’ who are ripe for the picking have landed in my lap as it were.

    I have a cunning plan…

I saunter towards the Inn and Malagar does exactly as i figured he would: He flies back, getting there long before me, and being completely buffaloed by my act tells the paladin “The lord of the underdark tells me he can get me out of this one, but he’s pretty sure you’re fucked.” and that I’m way evil and am going to eat everyone…

Upon my arrival at the Inn the Paladin is running for a weapon, any weapon while the druid runs around likewise trying to help. The mage and the monk have heard nothing about this so far as they are elsewhere on the ‘property’. I walk though the back door, which the elf left open and look around the main room of the establishment. Malagar watches me and decides to follow when I turn and leave the way I came in.

Once I’m out back the paladin (now with sword) starts ranting about “the evil monster” and how she will “strike me down”… Getting the attention of the mage and the monk and stirring the druid into a complete tizzy.

The druid snares me with vines around my hooves (vines!? Am I supposed to eat my way free?) as I head nonchalantly towards the barn and the paladin romps about waving her toy sword and screeching while Malagar looks confused. Finally I turn my head and speak to the paladin once the look of confusion as to why I’ve not broken my bonds flickers across her face.

“I do so hope this is not how you treat all of your potential customers… For if it is, you are surely doomed to a life of poverty.”

More jaws drop and confusion runs rampant. The paladin’s sword droops as she looks to the fiend, “You said it was evil!”

Malagar, looking more confused than the rest, “But, but… It said it was going to ‘See about the Inn’ and ‘Deal with it’.”

I, looking dejected and quite put out, “Yes, I wanted to see this Inn and, as it is a grand establishment I suppose I can deal with it being here in the middle of my forest as you’ve done nothing to harm anything.”

    All eyes look to Malagar.

I continue with something about always having my intents mistaken because of my *sniffle* coloration and how I was always being persecuted because everyone thinks black unicorns are evil.

At this I’m informed that I am welcome to stay; which means I am invited in and can now wreak some real havoc. Though the paladin (knowing Ravik) isn’t completely convinced and I have to give my word that I will not harm anyone as long as I stay. I do so, as *I* won’t be harming anyone…

I’m asked if I would like to stay in the stable, which prompts me to change my shape and assume my human guise, much to the continued shock of the party, and ask to be shown a room…

Thus ends the evening’s gaming. If they can convince me they have a goal that furthers my interests, I’ll join up with them. If they demonstrate that they can be useful followers, I’ll use them… Otherwise I’ll have them kill each other off and get my forest back.

    It’s good to be me.

Anyways, as I mentioned *way* up there at the beginning, levels mean nothing. Ravik is 4th level to the party’s 8+, yet I have successfully sowed some hate and discontent, a little chaos, and a good dose of mistrust… It’s all in how you use what you have available. 🙂

  • Good morning…

    Welcome to another weekend.

Today’s gaming session will see the first appearance of Raeshlavik in a sit-down RPG setting in about ten years. Scales, who is running an AD&D 3.5 game here on Saturdays, talked me into letting Mr. Evil out for a bit… I warned him that his game, world, and personal psyche just aren’t ready for something like Raeshlavik, but he insisted. So, warnings given, I was happy to oblige… Wolf and Lyon, who have had a brief 15 minute interlude with Ravik about ten years ago, looked at Scales and, in stereo, said “are you crazy!?”

    (chuckle)

It’s taken the better part of a week of spare time to fit Ravik into the AD&D 3.5 rules and the only way to do it was across three character sheets to handle his aspects. He fit best under a ‘monk’ category for now, but I’ll probably put forth the effort to make a class for him if Scales can successfully keep him from ruling the universe in the first fifteen minutes of game today.

I’ve also given Scales my copy of “Horizons” to play with. It’s that MMORPG that let’s you play a dragon… It’s been damn hard to pry him from the computer since then. 🙂

Other than that, not a lot to report from the last few days. I’ll post reports from the game today/tonight tomorrow… It should be quite humorous – in a dark and evil kind of way.

Gotta run, take it easy out there…
