Nineteen Cents Short of a Paradigm

Transmission issue

This morning on the way to work the hellcat flashed a warning message on the dash; “Service Shifter”, and then immediately went into limp mode.

I was able to get the car off the street and into the parking lot of the tire shop at the corner of Hampden and Chambers before pulling up the AAA app on the phone and getting a tow to the dealership.

Towing the car got a little complicated because when I put the car into park and shut it off, it wouldn’t start again – and if it won’t start it won’t come out of park. And I installed a block-off plate over the emergency release so that was a no-go.

So I managed to get it started and into neutral real quick, but then it wouldn’t shut off again because it’s not in park.

Then when the flatbed showed up we tried to push it back, and even though it was in neutral it was still in gear… So I got it started again and managed to get it lined up with the flatbed, where the driver got it chained up and winched it up into place.

Anyway, I’m guessing it’s the switch in the shifter that detects if it’s in manual mode. But the dealership is crazy busy – it was the first time i needed to stand in line to talk to my service rep – so they may not even be able to get to it for a day or two.

My CFO lives like a block from where I broke down, and after I texted him to explain that I would be a bit late today he drove over to make sure everything was okay.

I rode with him to the dealership, and then back to the office. He’s going to let me borrow his Mercedes for a couple of days so I don’t need to pay for Uber – and I think he wants an excuse to drive his Jag more. 🙂
